The signs and symptoms that let you know you have post nasal drip
Post Nasal Drip (PND) may be simply defined as excess mucus dripping down from the sinuses to the back of an individual’s throat.
Symptoms not only help to identify a disease but also help us take the required steps to deal with the condition.
Identifying the symptoms of post nasal drip at an early stage helps with the treatment process, furthermore if left untreated it may lead to more serious complications.
Often, people mistake post nasal drip as a cold or flu due to the increase of mucus production and a sore throat. This misconception may lead to treating the condition incorrectly, which then lead to problems such as bad breath, chest and sinus infections.
Below is a list of symptoms for post nasal drip:

                                    - Constantly clearing of the throat – This is actually the most telling symptom since mucus starts accumulating at the back of the throat. This causes one to constantly hawk to try and get rid of the mucus. Clearing and swallowing hard seems the only way to get rid of this stubborn mucus temporarily, before more mucus accumulates.  This is embarrassing and annoying.

                                    - A Running nose – Due to the excess secretion of mucus, the individual starts experiencing a runny nose with watery or thick mucus discharge. Usually a prolonged runny nose with no improvements from cold/flu medicines indicates post nasal drip.

                                    - Nasal congestion – Excess mucus gets accumulated in the nose causing congestion and nasal stuffiness. This could also lead to difficulties breathing through the nose.

                                    - A sore throat that never clears up – This problem becomes more frequent due to an accumulation of infected mucus in the throat. Bacteria from the infected mucus cause inflammation as well as irritation of the lining in the throat. A sore throat caused by post nasal drip does not lead to a cold.

                                    - Coughing – A very common symptom is coughing up a large amount of thick or yellowish mucus.

                                    - Constant swallowing – This is due to the excess mucus production.

                                    - A white or yellow coated tongue – Someone with post nasal drip would normally have a discolored tongue. This coating is a combination of mucus, sulfur compounds and in some cases, beverages and food particles. This could also be a source of bad breath.

                                    - Bad breath – Buildup of excess mucus in the throat causes bad breath because mucus is rich in protein. Mucus is the ideal food for bacteria to feed on which then results in bad breath. In some cases, bad breath becomes so sever that it disrupts your social life.
